Understanding Memory Care
Memory care can help those living with dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, and other cognitive challenges live well in a supportive, safe setting with tailored services that cater to their personal needs.
Our goal is to enhance our residents’ quality of life and support their cognitive function. At Kingston Residence of Marion, we use Teepa Snow’s GEMS memory care model to determine the level of care your loved one needs.
Teepa Snow’s GEMS® Model
Our community focuses on using tried-and-tested memory care techniques to assist our residents, and we take the initiative to support and educate families on the best way to communicate and interact with their loved ones.
We take inspiration from Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care and the GEMS model. We work with our staff to train them on how to support our residents with compassion, acknowledging every person’s capabilities and offering adequate support.
How do we achieve this? By understanding the level of care required through 6 categories, or “gems.”
Sapphire
A sapphire brain is likely to age normally, be organized, flexible, and in sync with other GEMS. Those in a sapphire state are considered wonderful care partners for individuals living with dementia due to their adaptability.
Emerald
Individuals in the emerald state may struggle to maintain clarity in their thoughts and communication. They may not identify these changes and may attribute issues to others around them.
Loved ones and caregivers dealing with this situation may find it easier to adapt and learn from it than to focus on shortcomings.
Diamond
People in a diamond state are considered to be sharp and clear of mind, but they also tend to become more rigid, displaying a high level of cognition with a little inflexibility towards everyday challenges.
They can still thrive despite not being comfortable with change. This state is often accompanied by stubbornness and a mix of behaviors from the past and present, making it difficult for families to recognize the presence of dementia.
Pearl
Individuals experiencing the pearl state often have constantly active reflexes and may struggle with a decline in gross motor skills and failing body systems. Despite these challenges, proper care can reveal the extraordinary pearl that remains.
Ruby
Individuals in the ruby state may struggle with a decline in motor skills, which may impact their vision, speech, and ability to easily chew or swallow. However, they’re able to perform larger movements and retain their strength.
Caregivers must combat stress by taking a deep breath, stepping back, and using a flexible and understanding approach to retreat to a calm and supportive state, just like a sapphire.
Amber
People in an amber state are known to focus on the present, leaning into sensations and their curiosity, with a weaker awareness of safety.
They seek enjoyable experiences but are highly vocal about their dislikes, which can make it challenging for caregivers to adjust to the person’s current behavior and their past self.
